EDITOR'S NOTES:
I met Oliver Hupfau in a swanky restaurant in London on my recent trip and both he and his talented friend Marc were immersed in the worlds of music and art. Oliver was also very much into concepts in digital modelling processes for companies that were on another level.
Somehow we got chatting and when he heard what we did he told me that his mother, who had unfortunately passed when Oliver was still a youth, had been into silk screen printing and that he himself had a long standing connection to graffiti and street culture.
In Oliver’s words he likes to describe what he does these days as fully digital, breaking images down to distortion to reveal how the fragile construction of the digital sphere can take on organic form. This idea ties into simulation theory—the thought that our reality might be an artificial construct with hidden rules. Just as glitches in a video game or corrupted file expose a system’s flaws, oddities in physics like quantum uncertainty could be seen as “glitches” in our own universe.
He would like us to us to question whether the world is as solid and real as it seems—or just a carefully crafted illusion prone to breaking down.
And with that in mind, he submitted his first silk design which is now at the printer’s in Italy. And hopefully, since we heard from the printer last night, it will be ready in a couple of weeks for us to proof.
