A Silk Vest For The Window - Paying Homage To The Early Days Of Charvet

A Silk Vest For The Window - Paying Homage To The Early Days Of Charvet

What now feels like many years ago when I was interviewing Jean-Claude Colban in his superb office above the Place Vendome - he revealed to me something I did not know about the history of menswear. He said that in the beginning of Charvet’s history the most sort after piece of menswear was the elaborate vest - that most of menswear was constricted to blacks and whites but the vest was a place where men could be very adventurous and in one instance he said that one of their better customers had commissioned an entire hunting scene to be hand embroidered into his vest made of velvet. These days you don’t hear too much about vests - and you rarely see them around town but I’m making one for the studio window this month to pair it with something else I’m working on. More to come.
