Sometimes it is hard to stay in your own lane, especially when there is so much white noise around you.
This morning an article appeared in my apple news feed on the rise of Sam Altman and his consolidation of power in the Chat GPT space. It was written in the Atlantic. I am on the new iPhone 16 waiting for apple intelligence to be loaded on with IOS 18.1. I had always promised myself that I would never become a slave to MAC but let's face it, they make it so easy. And so now that apple intelligence will be native I feel that the consolidation of AI in our lives arriving. All this tech talk makes you wonder if you had have gone in another direction, had you plonked yourself in Silicone Valley at an early age, might you have had a different course to your life.
But then something dawned on me, everyone has to have their function in society. Architects need to design houses, real estate agents need to sell them. Accountants need to run the numbers, bankers need to decipher them. Just because there is an assertion in a given period in one aspect of our lives, specifically I am referring to technology, doesn't mean that we all need to pile in. My job is to use it where I can as it becomes available. I trust you might be in agreement.
And that can sometimes be frustrating. The art of staying in your own lane is so important to maintaining happiness or at least some semblance of it. In fact, I don't value happiness as much as I value meaning and purpose. I am a believe in Viktor Frankl's logotherapy. I was once told that Isaac Beshevis Singer was once asked upon winning the Nobel Prize "are you happy?" to which he responded "how long can a man be happy for". So finding meaning and purpose is the greater pursuit because let's face it, life isn't always beer and skittles.
So today, I just wanted to reiterate, especially as my fellow Australians become increasingly wealthy and their largesse can sometimes be overwhelming - we become more American with each passing year - that no matter where you are at in life, there will always be someone richer, someone smarter, someone more talented, someone funnier, someone who will get more press and prestige. But we all have a function in society, mine is to make your neck look chic for the most part. Yours is whatever your chosen craft is, and, as I wish it for yourself, I hope to be able to stay content in the pursuit of my own craft.
Now onwards with the portrait competition. One of you asked for some clarification last night - can I use colour. Yes, in pencils, in water colour if you desire. In paint if you really want to put the time in. But mostly I want you to just have fun and give yourself the creative space you need under the auspices of "darling, I need some time out I am trying to win this darn portrait competition". And maybe you will have an hour to yourself, and maybe nothing comes of it. No matter, drop the pencil, have a meditation, come back to it later.
But one thing is for sure, NO AI. I have had enough of hearing about the Sam Altmans and Eric Schmidts of this world. Let them change the world whilst I continue to hone my craft, and you hone yours.
