I am super chuffed with the first submission. It comes from Shelley Black, an Australian in Melbourne, who, having suffered from some recent personal set backs has spent her time healing through engaging her art consistently each evening and decided she would contribute to our unique competition. I am in awe of the talent that is out there and it only serves to remind me how privileged I am to do the work I get to do since I am quite certain that many of our patrons and followers could do my job with their eyes closed. And, here is a little from Shelley herself.
I am an Australian artist and designer driven by a love of storytelling through visual art. My creative journey has taken many forms, from tattooing and illustration to jewellery design, but at the heart of everything I create is the same goal: to make objects that carry meaning as well as beauty.
I am drawn to Japanese art, symbolism, mythology, nature and traditional ornament from cultures around the world. I love combining ukiyo e woodblock art, Art Nouveau influences with celestial motifs, animals, sacred geometry and intricate decorative details to create designs that feel timeless while remaining uniquely my own.
For me, a scarf is more than an accessory—it is a moving canvas. I want my designs to evoke curiosity, invite closer inspection and become pieces that people treasure for years. Every line and pattern is carefully considered, balancing elegance with imagination and craftsmanship.
Creativity has been a constant throughout my life, helping me navigate challenges while allowing me to connect with others through art. This competition is an exciting opportunity to share my perspective with a wider audience and continue exploring the endless possibilities of design. I hope my work inspires people to find beauty, meaning and a sense of wonder in the everyday.
