I was rather happy that Lucy, who has been doing a lot of the heavy lifting on many of our more recent silks, suggested that she might contribute one of her own designs to the next round of printing. Valkyrie is the result, the Nordic goddess who transported slain men to the Valhalla where they would become great warriors in the sky who, in between campaigns, would be served mead by the Valkyrie. It was extremely sad for me to hear the news of Barry Humphries' passing. I recall not that many years ago seeing him in Launceston airport on my way home from the Central Highlands. At the baggage carousel in Sydney I walked up to him, handed him my business card, told him what a fan I was, said I'd love him to visit the Studio... I never heard from him. He just nodded his head.

There are places you go to when you are younger as a tourist on a bus or a boat. I grew up in an aspirational middle class, the grandson of a fishmonger on one side and a cafe owner on the other. My father worked very hard and was successful and his passion was travel. So he would bundle us all up at every chance he got and we would go to all sorts of places but always, seemingly, in a hurry. So as a young boy I had a different desire, I always wanted to go somewhere and plonk myself long enough that I felt like I was a local. Unfortunately, I wasn’t gifted enough in any of my skills that I was seconded anywhere nor did I strike a career path in my own business that allowed me to freely get up and go work anywhere in the world. So by the time I found my craft I was well and truly fixed in my city, Sydney, Australia.

I am so glad we chose his option. To see Venice in winter was magic. Firstly, it was filled with Venetians and not tourists, or if they were there, they were minimal and the ability to negotiate Venice was easy and effortlessly charming. You meander over one bridge, down a narrow passage, turn a corner, onto the next bridge. What a city! I had done Venice twice before and it was absolutely fantastic on both occasions but chaotic, hot and in many respects uncomfortable.

It's time for me to visit the looms again and it has been almost three years since I was last in Italy so I am excited to see what we can conjure up both in terms of new products and fabrics for the business along with new blog content. However, sadly, it comes as unusual times ahead with no certainty that our global economy will be as buoyant remains at the forefront of everyone's mind as we sail into 2023.

I never seem to find time like I used to in order to be creative. I also dislike the overuse of the word creative. It seems to be used in abundance, another word that gets bandied around these days. In order to avoid clichés might I just say, I can’t find enough me time… Oops I did it again.
