A DAY IN VENICE

A DAY IN VENICE

I am so glad we chose his option. To see Venice in winter was magic. Firstly, it was filled with Venetians and not tourists, or if they were there, they were minimal and the ability to negotiate Venice was easy and effortlessly charming. You meander over one bridge, down a narrow passage, turn a corner, onto the next bridge. What a city! I had done Venice twice before and it was absolutely fantastic on both occasions but chaotic, hot and in many respects uncomfortable.

My Island Homes - Two New Limited Edition Printed Silks

My Island Homes - Two New Limited Edition Printed Silks

I never seem to find time like I used to in order to be creative. I also dislike the overuse of the word creative. It seems to be used in abundance, another word that gets bandied around these days. In order to avoid clichés might I just say, I can’t find enough me time… Oops I did it again.

Odysseus Resists The Call Of The Sirens

Odysseus Resists The Call Of The Sirens

The Greeks told stories that were so good we are still telling them some 2500 years later. Of these stories I have a particular fondness for the wily Odysseus strapping himself to the mast to resist the call of the sirens, allowing the ship and crew to pass safely through the passage of wild waters. At the same time, he is perhaps the only one to hear the call of the sirens and my guess is that was a plus for Odysseus hence the expression we gave him on his face. This will be our next limited edition kerchief and pochette.

The Bow Tie

Those in the know, know that the best ties in the world come from Le Noeud Papillon in Sydney. Nicholas sells pre-cut bow ties, but he also does bespoke work as well, which was good news for me because the pre-cut bows are just slightly too large for my face. After some Whatsapp back and forth, Nicholas cut me a bow in premium grosgrain silk in his very unique modified butterfly pattern.

Melanie, I Agree With You

Melanie, I Agree With You

For years I thought that the roller skate song belonged to Janis Joplin until in May by a campfire I realised it was Melanie. In her magical song Brand New Key which I love for its attitude, its simplicity and its childlike almost nursery like beat (if that were the correct musical term here); there is this lyric that really resonates with me at the moment when she says:

Nothing Quite As Cool As A Great Scarf With An Overcoat Come Winter

Don't miss the sale because this is the end of the winter range. It's so chic to wear an overcoat and a scarf. Just look at James Spader and John F Kennedy Jnr at the 1977 premiere of Saturday Night Fever. And the scarves on offer are unique treasures you will keep forever.

Back On Deck With Fresh Stories And New Designs

I have no doubt I will be writing more on the subject of my most recent trek in the Snowy Mountains as it was quite an adventure but for the moment I am focusing on the silks that will come from it. Of the four days I spent out in the back country three were in a blizzard and or white out.
I met some exceptional people , mostly men, though I travelled with two exceptional women who were both faster across the snow and more adept at cross country skiing than myself. It was a privilege to be amongst younger, fitter and better skilled mountaineers.

How To Tie A 90 x 90 cm Silk Kerchief By Le Noeud Papillon

How To Tie A 90 x 90 cm Silk Kerchief By Le Noeud Papillon

There are of course a myriad of ways to tie a knot around yourself, any boy scout probably knows a dozen more than myself. And then there are scarf rings.

Perhaps the most number of ways I've seen them tied was in deck of cards from Hermes that went around a few years back. I was blown away to be honest. It looked like a month of Sundays worth of standing in the mirror.

For myself I prefer a single four in hand knot, also known as a school boy's knot, because it is easy to do and keeps the band of silk around the neck narrower than other types of knots. I then tuck the knotted ends under my sweater or jacket. To be fair, these days I rarely wear them with shirts because I find when you wear them with traditional shirts they tend to look more like ascots. When I am feeling louche or else ebullient, I will knot the kerchief and leave it hanging out as pictured. I tend to stay away from scarf rings, even though we produce them. The reason harks back to a quote I once read of Honore De Balzac where he says that the choice a man makes for his neckwear coupled with the manner in which he ties it, is the greatest portal into the manner and style of the man. I think he is indeed correct, but perhaps this is no longer relevant, given how few men these days are wearing anything around their neck.

That being said, it is wonderful to do something when nobody else is doing it. So all manners of neckwear for myself, are becoming that exotic bit of kit that separates you from the herd.

Enough said, enjoy the three knots I posted up this morning on Instagram and YouTube and please your eyes out for new silks and cashmere arriving this week and the following. They will be very short runs, very much worth having a look at.
